Network:

Motorcycle Injury Prevention Network

By building connections across healthcare, emergency services, academia, transport and the motorcycling community, we seek to create the foundations for lasting change in how motorcycle injury prevention is understood, evaluated and delivered

Background

The Motorcycle Injury Prevention Network (MIPnet) was established through the leadership of Dorset County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (DCH), bringing together a group of clinicians, researchers and partners with a shared purpose: to reduce motorcycle related injuries and fatalities across the Wessex region and nationally, through coordinated, evidence-based action. Dorset County Hospital’s sustained commitment and leadership have been fundamental to shaping the network with its clinical, research and service-based expertise underpinning the development of this work and its progression from local innovation to wider collaborative network.

The network builds on the work and success of DocBike, a national charity founded in Wessex by Dr Ian Mew. The charity delivers rapid, on -scene medical care to injured motorcyclists and promotes education, awareness and prevention. DocBike and its partners have already demonstrated measurable impact locally, contributing to a significant reduction in motorcycle related fatalities, and highlighting the potential of prevention-focused approaches.

There was growing recognition that while valuable initiatives such as DocBike and other local and national efforts were underway, activity can be fragmented and opportunities to evaluate impact, share learning and scale effective interventions were being missed.

By bringing together expertise from healthcare, emergency services, academia, transport and the motorcycling community, MIPnet provides a collaborative platform to strengthen research, improve prevention and translate evidence into real world change.

Vision

Going forward, MIPnet aims to transform the landscape of motorcycle injury prevention across the country. Our focus includes improving understanding of risk and injury burden, strengthening the use of linked data and analytics, and supporting the development and evaluation of targeted interventions that reduce harm.

At the heart of the network is a commitment to collaboration and public involvement; ensuring the voices and experiences of motorcyclists inform research priorities and prevention strategies. Through shared purpose and collective action, MIPnet is laying the groundwork for a more coordinated, data-driven, impactful approach to motorcycle safety.

Aims

The overall aim of the Motorcycle Injury Prevention Network (MIPnet) is to reduce motorcycle collisions, serious injuries and fatalities by:

  • Providing leadership and coordination for motorcycle injury prevention activity across the region
  • Developing, evaluating and improving evidence based interventions to reduce motorcycle related injuries and deaths
  • Supporting collaborative, multidisciplinary research, including opportunities for early career researchers and allied health professionals
  • Using robust data and analytics to better understand risk, injury patterns and outcomes
  • Embedding patient and public involvement to ensure work reflects lived experience
  • Sharing learning and influencing policy and practice to improve motorcycle safety locally, regionally and nationally
